The last major internet outage, which knocked many of the world’s top websites offline in June, lasted less than an hour. “This is epic,” said Doug Madory, director of internet analysis for Kentik Inc. “If your game isn't running as usual please note that there's been an issue with Facebook login servers and the moment this gets fixed all will be back to normal,” puzzle game app Match Masters said on its Twitter account. Several users using their Facebook credentials to log in to third-party apps such as Pokemon Go and Match Masters were also facing issues.

Multiple employees said they had not been told what had gone wrong.įacebook has experienced similar widespread outages with its suite of apps this year in March and July. Facebook's response was made much more difficult because employees lost access to some of their own tools in the shutdown, people tracking the matter said. One Facebook employee told Reuters that all internal tools were down. Although a rare phenomenon, such an outage has had a huge impact on the site’s users, which include businesses."We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible, and we apologise for any inconvenience," he said. This is a rare blackout for Facebook, which is the world’s largest social media network and currently dominates the industry. There’s no word yet from Facebook about what may be causing the problem or when those sites, including Messenger and WhatsApp, will be operational again, but we will update with more information when it’s available. Users can load games they already have installed and the browser works, but social features or installing new games does not. The problem also appears to be affecting its virtual reality arm, Oculus. Currently, users impacted by the outage cannot send and receive any messages, nor can they post or view new content. On Instagram and Whatsapp, users were able to load their old feeds and messages, but no new content was available. Those hoping to log into their Facebook accounts simply received an error page stating that their browser could not connect to the social media site, which hosts nearly three billion active users.
